Subliminal Decor

sub·lim·i·nal
səˈblimənl/
adjective
Psychology
adjective: subliminal
1.
(of a stimulus or mental process) below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone's mind without their being aware of it.

When my kids were young, I was not above using every trick in the parenting book and a few I made up myself. I painted this quote by Emerson at the top of the stairwell where my kids saw it every single day of their lives. In the entire upstairs transformation this was the only thing I went to change and had some trepidation over. I picked up the roller to prime over it...and put it back down.

I took a couple of photos of it and called it a night. The next morning I took a realistic look at how dirty the wall was and within a few hours it looked like this.

You may be asking yourself if my subliminal message plan worked.

They turned out great and I'm proud of them but is any of that due to seeing that quote thousands of times? We'll never know. Too many variables involved. But I can safely say this: it couldn't have hurt and it was better than me saying it thousands of times.

Today's parenting AND decorating advice: Use all your tools!

Now...what to put in that space?
